The people who took over the franchise after Blizzard North split just don’t know how to do that kind of storytelling. The forces of hell in D1 and D2 represent the apocalypse and the game feels like the dying of the light. The main thing though, is that the sense of horror and desperation is gone. Part of it was color palette and design but overall the feel was just different, and they redid all the art and designs with a very Warcraft feel, especially the armor and weapons. Yes it had magic and demons and some weird creatures out in the desert, but it didn’t have the derivative feel of Warcraft at all. On top of that, the world just didn’t feel like a fantasy world. Heaven was no longer a total mystery represented only by Tyrael, who seems weak and ill equipped compared to the enemies. The horadrim were no longer an order from the distant past that failed to contain the evil. Demons were no longer mysterious forces of unstoppable corruption that people knew about only from moldy journals found in defiled catacombs. They dramatically expanded the scale and scope of the lore after D2. All the settlements that acted as act hubs felt like isolated pockets of humanity cowering behind walls surrounded by beasts and monsters. The desert setting of Act II felt almost Lovecraftian. The biggest change in feel is that Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 take place in an a world full of people who can’t cope with the existence of hell and demons, and the setting feels hostile and claustrophobic.
